Texaco Art Competition

Hi guys, We were doing the Texaco Art Competition entries for art today. The children have brought them home to finish them off and to include some information on the back. Any information that is needed I have listed below for the children. Some children were saying that they don't want to enter theirs in and that's ok as well. If you could have all the pages done and in to me by Thursday that would be brilliant.

Seasonal play songs

We wish you a Merry Christmas

We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
We wish you a merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Glad tidings I bring
To you and your kin
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year

We want some milk and cookies
We want some milk and cookies
We want some milk and cookies
Please bring it right here
Glad tidings I bring
To you and your kin
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year

We won't go until we get some
We won't go until we get some
We won't go until we get some
So bring it out here
Glad tidings I bring
To you and your kin
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year

We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
We wish you a Merry Christmas
And a happy New Year
Glad tidings I bring
To you and your kin
Glad tidings for Christmas
And a happy New Year

Rudolph the Red Nosed Raindeer
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
had a very shiny nose.
And if you ever saw him,
you would even say it glows.

All of the other reindeer
used to laugh and call him names.
They never let poor Rudolph
join in any reindeer games.

Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
"Rudolph with your nose so bright,
won't you guide my sleigh tonight?"

Then all the reindeer loved him
as they shouted out with glee,
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer,
you'll go down in history!

Jingle Bell Rock

Jingle bell, jingle bell
Jingle bell rock
Jingle bell swing
And jingle bells ring
Snowin' and blowin'
Up bushels of fun
Now the jingle hop has begun.

Jingle bell, jingle bell
Jingle bell rock
Jingle bells chime in
Jingle bell time
Dancin' and prancin'
In jingle bell square
In the frosty air.

What a bright time
It's the right time
To rock the night away
Jingle bell, time
Is a swell time
To go glidin' in a
One horse sleigh.

Giddy-up, jingle horse
Pick up your feet
Jingle around the clock
Mix and mingle
In a jinglin' beat

That's the jingle bell rock.

Seasonal play!

The Elves and the Shoemaker.
Introduction: Welcome to our winter show. We are going to tell you the story of the elves and the shoemaker. We hope you enjoy it.

Narrator 2: It was Christmas week. The shoemaker and his wife were working in their shop. Outside everyone was preparing for Christmas. People were shopping, buying gifts and listening to Carol Singers.

Some Carol Singing Rudolph the red nosed raindeer

Shoemaker: Did you hear that. Carol Singers. Christmas is coming. Perhaps business will get better when people start buying presents.

Wife: I hope so.

Shoemaker: If I sell a pair of shoes tomorrow I will be able to buy enough food for a nice Christmas dinner. I will try to buy you a present also.

Wife: I don't want a present, a nice Christmas meal will make me happy. My Christmas wish is that everyone will have enough to eat this Christmas. This leather will be enough to make a beautiful pair of shoes. It's getting late, let's finish up.

Shoemaker: I will just finish cutting this leather. I will make the shoes in the morning.

Narrator 2: The shoemaker and his wife went home. During the night some elves arrived in the workshop.

Elf 1: My feet are freezing.

Elf 2: Let's warm ourselves by the fire.

Elf 3: If we are going to stay here to keep warm, we should leave the householders a present.

Elf 4: But we haven't any money to buy them a present.

Elf 5: There must be something we can do. We can show them we are thankful in another way.

Elf 6: Look at that leather. We can help them and say thanks by making a pair of shoes.

All: We'll tap, tap, tap all night
We'll tap and tap with all our might.

Narrator 1: The next morning the shoemaker and his wife came downstairs.

Wife: These are the best pair of shoes you have ever made.

Shoemaker: I didn't make these.

Wife: They are beautiful, perfect, elegant, amazing. You must have been up so late working on these?

Shoemaker: I didn't make these!

Wife: Oh I just love them. Maybe I'll just keep them.....

Shoemaker: Give me those... You already have 3 pairs that look exactly like these... I will put them in the window.

Customer: Can I have the shoes in the window please. They are beautiful.

Wife: Well......

Shoemaker: Of course. Here you go. Merry Christmas.

Shoemaker: Great. I have enough money to go buy more leather. I think I will be able to make a pair just as nice as those.

Returns with leather

Shoemaker: It's getting late. I will cut the leather and make the shoes tomorrow. Turn up the radio
please. This is my favourite Christmas song. (Whole class sing a song) Jingle bell rock

Elves: We'll tap, tap, tap all night
We'll tap and tap with all our might.

Wife: Wow. Another beautiful pair of shoes. When did you make these?

Shoemaker: I didn't. I will put them on the window.

Customer 2: Can I have those shoes on the window. I am going to spend Christmas with my sister. I know she will love them.

Shoemaker: Look! Now we have enough money for a beautiful Christmas dinner and to buy more leather.

Wife: It's a miracle. My Christmas wish came through. We need to find out who has been helping us. Let’s sleep downstairs tonight.

Enter Elves

Elf 1: It's so warm again in here. This is way better than the cold woods. Let’s get down to work.

All: We'll tap, tap, tap all night
We'll tap and tap with all our might.

Wife: O look at them. They are brilliant! They have helped us so much. How can we thank them?

Shoemaker: I spent all of our money on food and leather. I wish we could afford to get them something.

Wife: I know.... I will make them some warm clothes. I have some warm clothes upstairs. I think they will appreciate that.

Narrator: The shoe maker and his wife spent all of Christmas Eve making clothes and shoes for the elves. That night they hid again and waited for the elves to arrive.

Elf 2: Where is the leather?

Elf 3: Look! They have clothes and a card on the work table. It has our names on it.

Elf 4: Dear Elves,
Thank you so much for your excellent shoemaking. You have helped us so much. Please accept these clothes as our way of saying thanks. Please join us tomorrow for Christmas dinner. We don't have a lot but your company would make us very happy on Christmas day.

Elf 5: This is the best Christmas present ever.

All gather around the table for dinner

Shoemaker: Thank you for coming. It is great to spend Christmas with others. My Christmas wish is that everyone has someone to spend Christmas with and that no one is lonely.

Wife: My Christmas wish is that everyone has enough food to eat this Christmas.

Elf 6: Our Christmas wish is that everyone has somewhere to spend Christmas. Mrs Shoemaker, what is your favourite Christmas song?

All sing song. We wish you a merry christmas

Narrator 2: Thank you for coming to our show. We wish you all a happy Christmas. Our Christmas wish is that you will all have a Christmas filled with fun times with family and friends.

Letter home

22/11/2016
Dear Parent/Guardian

Please note the following information-

Student  Council Movie Night -this Thursday- 2 e per child.
·         Drop off at 6.30 to classroom and pick up at 7.45. Please note it may take a little time checking kids in and out.
·         Children may wear pj’s and bring cushions with them if they wish.
·         Children may bring a treat
·         Student Council were deciding on movies and will give me a final list tomorrow. All movies will be G and will not be PG rated movies
·         As it is dark very early we ask that children are dropped off and collected by an adult/that parents group together to organise supervision to and from the school.
Sam Maguire Cup
·         Sam is coming to the school on Thursday morning with Neil our GAA coach! If children can wear blue or Dublin colours-we will get a picture with each class grouping.

Xmas Appeal
·         The PC and the Student Council were discussing charities for this year’s appeal. The Student Council are checking up with Dublin based charities to find out what their needs are with the hope that children will donate a small item to the charity that they will choose.
·         The charities work with the homeless and we will be covering this with the children before Xmas.

Parking-
Can I remind parents not to park on the roundabout, including days when it is wet-it is very frustrating and unfair on other parents but is also a health and safety issue.

Science Week

All children were involved in different experiments and activities during Science Week.  The older children in 5th and 6th class were involved in the Intel Science Competition. They worked on their own or in groups and developed a range of projects from sound insulation ,to health/effects of diet  etc.
Huge work and more importantly practical hands on learning came from their projects as they carried out experiments and wrote up their findings . All the children were commended by the judges but in particular the judges highly commended some of the 4th class children-Diego, Daniela, Yasmin and Alicia.
Only one project progresses to the next stage. This group had a really interesting project which included coding and related to sensors and traffic lights-well done August, Narrotam, Lochlan and Vedh from Colum’s class and we hope they do well in the next round!

Marathon
The children in 6th class were involved in running a marathon over a period of time from when they came back to school and finishing up last Sunday. It was a great achievement!
Well done Karl and his class for all their hard work. This project was initiated by DCC. It was unfortunate that DCC held the final event on a Sunday as not all the children could attend for the last run, but they put in fantastic effort right throughout. Not many adults can say they ran a marathon in primary school!

The PC will be looking into a History Project based on our school/families. There will be a need for volunteers who may have some interest in history.
Topic/themes/ideas will need to be discussed but it could be a very interesting project where we learn about each other. Some staff have already expressed interest and will join the group. More info to follow
Reminder-Food Fair-St Vincent’s GAA Club, Malahide Road De 2nd-6pm-8pm-more info to follow from the Parent Council.
Thanks to the PC for their continuous hard work/support to the school

Other dates this week-
BOM meeting-tomorrow night

Staff Meeting-this Thursday straight after school

Lyrics
I can change the world, with my own two hands
Make a better place, with my own two hands
Make a kinder place, with my own two hands
With my own, with my own two hands
With my own, with my own two hands

I can make peace on earth, with my own two hands
And I can clean up the earth, oh with my own two hands
And I can reach out to you, with my own two hands
With my own, with my own two hands
Oh, with my own, oh with my own two hands

I'm gonna make it a brighter place, (With my own)
I'm gonna make it a safer place, (With my own)
I'm gonna help the human race, (With my own)
(With my own two hands)

I can change the world, with my own two hands
Make a better place, with my own two hands
Make a kinder place, with my own two hands
With my own, with my own two hands
With my own, with my own two hands

Projects on habitats

As part of homework this week and the week after mid term the class will be doing habitat projects. The project is due on the 9th of November. The week we come back I will not give grammar sheets or maths sheets to get the children an opportunity to finish off their projects. I had hoped to start the project last week but we had our assembly so this got in the way

What must you do:
Pick a habitat and give a short description of it.
Pick an animal that lives in that habitat.
Gather information about the Habitat and how the animals adapts/lives in this habitat.
·         What are the main characteristics of the habitat? (Climate, Location etc)
·         Why is it suitable for the animal?
·         What does it look like?
·         What food does the animal get there?

They may present the project in whatever way they wish. (Factfile, drawing, Powerpoint etc.)
I don’t expect pages and pages of work. 1-2 pages is plenty. The aim of this is that they will learn about a habitat themselves and also learn from their peers by listening to the presentations on habitats.

Here are some links to help with the research.

Paula also told me that using the search engine kidrex is brilliant because it has great safety measures for the kids and directs them straight to children's websites:

http://www.kidrex.org/

Thanks,

Brian.
